Honestly, energy weapons get the best showing of the new wepons customization system. Plus the short stock is actually GOOD for a rifleman build, on a laser rifle (even if recoil > full auto and Marskman > sniper) As Lasers actually get damage modifications from barrels unlike most ballistics. It won't qualify for the 'sniper' perk stuff, but it will keep your gunslinger damage while adding the boost of sniper barrel damage. Or at least slap an improved long barrel on it. If you have not done it already, have you considered a sniper barrel on your laser pistol? Because that is a thing you can do.
Combined with the Gunslinger perk and the mods I added, it does 119 damage per shot. xD My favourite so far is the Two Shot Laster Pistol.
