During the ongoing site cleanup program, the DOE laboratories and former production sites have developed a wide range of site-specific processes and more » procedures for conducting radiological characterization of dry active waste (DAW) that is managed as low-level radioactive waste.
While the initial mission components relied heavily upon reactor physics and chemistry, the environmental programs have increasingly relied upon development of more accurate and effective measurement methodologies to determine the radiological and chemical properties of the unique waste streams that were generated during the weapons production and testing mission. Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessor agencies have performed a wide mission involving nuclear materials and weapons development, production, testing, and modernization.
